The boy from the barrack
The story of a boy who immigrates to Germany in the hope of leading a better life. Dimitris, born in the small town of Farsala in the south-eastern part of the Greek region of Thessaly, grew up in an extremely poor family. Despite the adverse circumstances, he spent a modest childhood and youth in a small village. His parents were uneducated and lived in great poverty, but this did not stop him from completing primary school with top marks. When the time came for the grammar school entrance exam, he also passed with flying colours. The six years of grammar school were a challenge and Dimitris had to fight hard to pass the exams every year and finally pass his final exams. However, despite his outstanding performance at school, he was unable to enter a Greek university as there was a restriction on entry at the time. Disappointed by the limited opportunities, Dimitris decided to emigrate to Germany to work and study at the same time.
